  • British Judo Association: ‘Syd was at the same time gruff, scary, tough and funny with a wicked sense of humour, a great coach and teacher and a skilled technician with a lethal osotogari which he strengthened by practicing in the swimming pool doing uchikomi against the resistance of the water’
  • The Guardian ‘Other Lives’: ‘Syd quickly became obsessed with judo and underwent intense training, often running the seven miles back to his home in Wembley to lift weights after a two-hour session at the Budokwai.’
  • Kano Society Bulletin Tribute: ‘Syd was also a major driving force behind the development of amateur sumo, or “amasumo”, in the United Kingdom, an interest that he picked up while studying in Japan.’
  • Team GB: ‘He also became a judo, sumo and martial arts commentator on British television. He also had minor film roles in Guy Ritchie’s comedy crime movie Snatch, the sumo wrestling movie Secret Society, and Kenneth Branagh’s As You Like It in 2006.’
